Kites have gone high tech. We were shopping for a birthday gift for my seven year old nephew Wen Jia when we thought he could learn how to fly a kite. Nowadays kites come in durable ripstop nylon (parachute material according to the proprietor of the kite shop), fibreglass frame & interlocking stitches (?) I remember we used to make our own kites fashioned out of bamboo frames & rice paper. Bamboo was abundant everywhere & the paper costs less than RM1.00. The more adventurous would stick the strings with crushed glass & have a go at "cutting" other kites flying in the air. And if a kite was defeated, the kids will run all over to claim the prize.

I remember making kites the same way with my cousins, too, when we were a bunch of tiny, winy people. Boy, the world has gone to hell. What's wrong with making kites with bamboo and rice paper? Why must everything be made out of plastic and be high-tech?
